OUR PLEDGE
For the Acceleration of Higher Education for Sustainability
We believe that degree-granting higher education programs, regardless of their discipline, size, format or geography, have the power to change the mindset and behaviors of their students and, therefore, the responsibility to transform their content to take into account the latest science and knowledge about planetary boundaries.
Education for sustainable development and global citizenship is Target 4.7 of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To contribute to reaching this target, we commit to supporting pedagogical, governance and dissemination practices that foster the integration of sustainability across higher education curricula.
This Commitment may include but is not limited to:
Teaching students about principles of environmental and social sustainability and supporting faculty and staff in this transition
No longer teaching students theories and techniques which are in direct contradiction to scientifically established planetary boundaries
Promoting competencies for sustainable development, including systems thinking, critical thinking, normative competency and anticipatory competency
Adapting research focuses and practices to sustainability-related priorities
Seeking interdisciplinary collaboration across higher education stakeholder groups
By signing this Pledge, we make this Commitment for our communities and for those to come.
