Alumni Sprints by Back to School for the Planet bring program graduates back to their former classrooms alongside current students to study sustainability topics that may not have been offered when they were enrolled, adding a bold new dimension to skill updating and community building. In alignment with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4, Alumni Sprints foster an innovative collaborative environment for lifelong learning, providing the following benefits:
An opportunity for the institution to showcase its sustainability expertise
Networking and employment opportunities for students and alumni
Elevated classroom discussion with a more practical focus for lecturers and participants
Maximizing the lifelong learning potential of higher education institutions can significantly expand the reach of sustainability knowledge and skills among both current students and future professionals. Any school can accelerate this change by inviting its graduates Back to School for the Planet.
Alumni Sprints are open to all higher education institutions worldwide.
Participation involves a voluntary annual contribution of €60 to support our non-profit mission. There are no restrictions based on geography or institutional size. The only requirement is that institutions offer at least one sustainability course or activity they wish to open to both enrolled students and alumni. This shared learning space becomes the foundation for alumni engagement, enabling graduates who may not have had access to sustainability education during their studies to update their knowledge and bring new insights to their professional and community roles.
As a non-profit, Back to School for the Planet works to make this practice widely accessible through advocacy, communication, and a growing network of participating faculty and alumni. Institutions that already have – or wish to develop – lifelong learning initiatives can partner with our organization to gain visibility and amplify their impact.
The BTSP Alumni Sprint Toolkit serves as a resource to support universities in their implementation of the initiative. This toolkit is designed to provide institutions with the necessary guidance, templates, and tools to effectively plan, execute, and evaluate their alumni initiatives within the framework of the BTSP initiative.
Within the toolkit, and in addition to a complete Guide for Universities, schools will find resources including:
Customized Code of Conduct for Alumni, a guiding framework to ensure ethical conduct and promote a positive and supportive environment within the classroom and the BTSP Alumni Community
Customized Alumni Sprint Communication Kit, including email templates, social media graphics, and newsletter excerpt examples
Customized Alumni Sprint Surveys to measure the effectiveness and impact of the initiative
Customized Alumni Sprint Certificate Template for participants, including students, alumni and faculty
By leveraging these resources, universities can accelerate their progress in sustainability education and maximize the impact of their alumni engagement efforts.
